This book is one of the attempts to understand and embrace the Nightside. Unlike many others, which discuss the Tree of Qliphoth from a broader perspective, Edgar has chosen to focus on one concept encountered within the dark realms of the Other Side – the Qliphothic universe of Baratchial. If you are familiar with the Tree of Night as an initiatory map and the Tunnels of Set, you may also know that Baratchial is the name of a pathway connecting two Qliphothic realms – Satariel, which is the Womb of the Dark Mother, and Thaumiel, which is the Throne of the Twin God. These two forces permeate and influence the pathway and its magical powers, opening way to the mastery of our destiny before entering the Void itself. At the Baratchial Tunnel, it signifies the state of darkness or blackness and is often associated with decay, putrefaction, or death. This represents the dissolution of the old, impure elements to make way for a new beginning. Baratchial is also considered a state of chaos and disintegration. Adepts believed that in order to achieve transmutation and spiritual enlightenment, the impurities of the base material (often represented as the "prima materia") must be broken down and destroyed. This process of putrefaction was seen as a necessary step in the transformation of base matter into a higher, purified state.
Working under Baratchial stimulates the senses, intoxicates the mind, produces a specific type of trance. Many people faint upon encountering their dense liminal energies that intoxicate our being, or arouse their excitement and aggression in some extraordinary way, unlike any other magical process when working in the tunnels.
